YERKES
OBSERVATORY STUDY, Williams Bay, Wisconsin
Study sponsored by the Dreihaus Foundation to develop ideas for future
potential for 77 acre site related to the Yerkes Observatory. The remarkable
design and cultural history of the site continually used since 1897 as
part of the Astrophysics Department of the University of Chicago, along
with the excellent condition of the Olmsted Brothers-designed grounds
provides the basis for the recommendation that the facilities and grounds
be protected from development and maintained as a Foundation for astrophysics
and nature study continuing education. The grounds immediately surrounding
the Observatory are used jointly for educational purposes and as a public
park within the greater community. The study identified the sensitive
development of outlying parcels to raise funds for an endowment for the
re-oriented foundation, sited a new visitor information facility, and
residential inn for foundation attendees.
